GENRE 2

Jazz

Jazz is genre of music that originated in African-American communities during the early 20th century. 
It is a genre that makes great use of improvisation and syncopated rhythms as well as its own independent major/minor scales.

  • Dave Brubeck
  • Louis Armstrong
  • Billie Holiday

One of the most famous jazz recordings is "Take Five" by Paul Desmond.
Recorded at Columbia Records' 30th Street Studio in New York City on July 1, 1959, fully two years later it became an unlikely one-hit wonder and the best-selling jazz single of all time. It was performed by The Dave Brubeck Quartet on their 1959 album "Time Out".
It is written in the key of E flat minor and is famous for its distinctive two chord piano vamp, catchy sax melody and a drum solo. The name came from the unusual 5/4 time.

  • Since I'm Irish it's probably important that I start with traditional Irish music.

THE HISTORY:
Most important bits
  • This music saw its peak from the 9th to the middle of the 11th century
  • The oldest instrument associated with it is the Harp
  • The original ancient tunes have been collected and passed on through generations
